For over a decades, this the place South Floridians have turned to for straight-ahead jazz. The keystone of 88.9FM's programming is serious Jazz and the Jazz Party show is a combination of contemporary works, classics, vocals, bop, blues, swing and the occasional off-the-wall rarity.
Mel Lipton was born in New York City in 1933 and he was there through the 40's and 50's, hearing most of the jazz greats live at venues such as The Royal Roost, Birdland, and Bop City. He moved to Miami from Houston, Texas, and became affiliated with the station 1995. Going from a business career to becoming a jazz DJ was an opportunity he only fantasized about as he was a great fan of legendary Symphony Sid and the other great DJ's.
He plays the clarinet in the privacy of his own closet so as not to offend anyone.
Good for him. He plays on his show straight ahead Jazz at its simplest and purest form, be it small combos, big bands or vocalists. He says he prefers acoustic instrumentation but never rules anything out.
Mel's philosophy on the music is simple as well: "The music is intended for the audience. It must be lyrical, subtle and melodic with the proper intensity to reflect a mood. "I believe to enjoy jazz you don't have to be an expert. I leave that to the Musicians. All you have to do is listen, enjoy and tap your foot."
